ClocksBlog LgIn case you hadn't already guessed from the greyer skies, colder weather and darker evenings, autumn is here, resulting in lighter mornings and darker evenings. Whether you’re a home owner or looking to buy or sell, make sure you take a look at our top tips for autumn.

Set those outside lights – darker evenings mean you need to turn on your outdoor lights or amend the time they come on. If you are selling your home, it is important that you do this so that potential buyers can see your home.

Close the curtains – remember if it’s dark outside and your lights are on, people can probably see inside! Not only do you not want the whole neighbourhood to know what you are up to this also means people can see inside your home and identify high value objects. By ensuring you close your curtains when it’s dark you’re keeping your home both secure and more energy efficient!

Check your alarms - when moving your clocks backwards make sure you check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms – if you’re a landlord make sure you are up to date with this legislation that was introduced on 1st October here.

Put outdoor furniture away - we hate to say it but you’re probably not going to need that BBQ and garden furniture for a while now, so store it somewhere safe and secure, this will prevent weather damage.

Check for drafts - check your windows and doors for any drafts and if there are any get these sorted before the colder, windier weather really kicks in!

Clear debris - keep on top of falling leaves and clear the debris from paths and gutters, this is especially important if you’re selling your home as you don’t want potential buyers slipping over.

Get cooking – autumn offers the perfect opportunity for some autumnal cooking, whip up some bread or chilli to really make your house smell amazing. Find out more about creating a welcoming environment here.

Save money – many people start to put their heating on at this time of year resulting in an increase in household bills, try popping on an extra layer or having a hot drink before you switch yours on.

Think about your viewing - If you're looking to buy a new home, try and book your viewing for when it's still light or make sure you drive past during the day to see what the house looks like.

Thinking of buying or selling - if you've been thinking of moving, now is the time to start looking if you would ideally like to be moved before Christmas. Start your search for a property here or book a free valuation.
