Today is the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo where - on Sunday 18th June 1815, near Waterloo in present day Belgium - a French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by an Anglo-allied army commanded by the Duke of Wellington, so ending Nepoleon's rule as the Emperor of the French.
This anniversary got us thinking about a town where we sell and let houses - Waterloovile - and had us wondering if there was any connection between the town and the battle.
It turns out the town wasn't named after the battle at all, but after a pub. After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, British soldiers disembarked at Portsmouth. Legend has it that they made their way 8 miles north and stopped at the first village pub they came across to get boozy and celebrate their victory. It's thought that some of the soldiers liked the beer so much that they chose to settle in the village. The pub was named The Heroes of Waterloo in their honour, and the village around it became Waterlooville.
To find out a little bit more about Waterlooville, we spoke to the Lettings Manager of our Waterlooville branch, Theresa Stormont.
Tell us a little bit about Waterlooville today.
"Waterlooville is a thriving town located a few miles from Hampshire's stunning coastline. The local area boasts excellent eating and shopping, with beautiful walks and spectacular scenery. Waterlooville has the feel of a community that you would expect to find in a village, but all of the amenities of a city centre with exceptional education and leisure facilities to boot."
And what about the property market?
"The Waterlooville market is extremely buoyant, particularly the 3/4 bedroom houses up to £250,000. There are up and coming new build developments but also an excellent selection of different property styles from specialist retirement developments to executive style family homes."
"Properites to rent start around £425 pcm for studios and £750-£795 for 2 beds, rising to £850-950 for a 3 bed family home. Letting a home as a landlord remains a sound business opportunity as demand continues to outstrip supply."
