Why move to Winlaton?

Winlaton and Blaydon border onto Green belt and both are only a short distance from the Derwent Walk Country Park and the Keelman's Way. A short car journey gets you into countryside whether it be Northumbria famous for its castles and stunning beaches or Durham and the Dales. There are frequent buses to both the historic city of Newcastle and one of Europe's largest shopping malls, Gateshead Metro Centre There is also access to the A1 North and South and Newcastle Airport is situated approximately 7 miles away.

In close proximity are many historic and interesting places, ranging from the 17th Century Gibside Hall and the Blaydon Burn Belts Corn Mill of a similar date to the local blacksmith buried in St Paul's churchyard known as Coffee Johnny who was immortalized in the famous local song 'Blaydon Races'.

The area is very popular with families due to the good local primary schools and the 'outstanding' St Thomas More Catholic Academy. People brought up in the area tend to stay in the local area.

 

The local market

Winlaton and Blaydon represent extremely good value for money and therefore demand for property is good. As a popular residential area, there is a diverse range of properties in the local area, from Victorian terraces to modern new build developments. There are some large estates built in the 1960's. In recent years the area has seen redevelopment offering a wider range of properties. One of the most sought after areas in NE21 is the prestigous Axwell Park Estate with its private lake and gated park.

 

Location

Commuting throughout the region is made easy due to the proximity of the A1, as well as being only 5 miles from Newcastle Central Station, where the East Coast main line provides further accessibility. Newcastle International Airport is situated 7 miles to the north. History and sport

There is a wide range of leisure activities in the Blaydon/Winlaton area. There are two rugby and cricket clubs, a leisure centre that includes swimming pool and gym and a running club. The person who made Winlaton unique was Ambrose Crowley who set up his iron works here in 1691 He took a 99 year lease on some buildings and 4 acres of land. This started the factory which made the name of Crowley known throughout the length and breadth of England. At one time this was the largest iron works in Europe. The Blaydon area is the origin of the well known traditional song 'Blaydon Races' written by a local musician George Ridley in 1862.

 

Development

In the last 15 years some of the major developers have brought their popular designs and made modern estates of affordable housing. This has been interspersed with more bespoke developers who have carved out a more of a niche market in terms of design and atmosphere. There is a mix of traditional terraced housing that at one point in time were linked into the mining industry.

A host of other retailers including Boots, Superdrug, Iceland, B&M's, Home Bargains and Greggs are also found there. Approximately 3 miles away is Gateshead Metro Centre one of Europe's largest shopping malls with a host of major retailers and an abundance of restaurants.
