Why move to Wishaw?

Wishaw is large town in North Lanarkshire. Situated on the edge of the popular and renowned Clyde Valley. It is about 15 miles south-east of Glasgow City Centre and is a popular commuter town. The town has a long and proud industrial history based predominately on coal mining and steel production. This is turn led to the setting up of many ancillary industries in and around the town.

In its post-industrial age, Wishaw has witnessed various regeneration efforts and new developments with a focus now on service and retail sectors with a popular retail park well established to the south of the town centre, a town centre which has undergone a programme of regeneration over the past fifteen years.

 

Education

The area is well served with an abundance of renowned primary and secondary schools throughout the town and its surrounds. The secondary schools include Clyde Valley High School, St Aidans High School and Coltness High School.

Further education is well served by Motherwell College based at Ravenscraig and West of Scotland University at nearby Hamilton.

 

Hospitals

Wishaw is home to the renowned University Hospital which provides a large number of jobs within the town. Monklands Hospital in Airdrie and Hairmyres Hospital at East Kilbride are within driving distance.

 

Transport

Wishaw and its surroundings are well served by numerous bus routes from within the area and beyond to larger towns such as Hamilton and Motherwell as well as further afield to Glasgow.

Wishaw Train Station provides a regular train service to the larger cities and towns. It has a regular service to Glasgow Central, to Edinburgh Waverley as well as the nearby towns of Hamilton and Motherwell amongst others. Wishaw train station provides free parking for up to 25 cars.

 

Commuting

One of the benefits from living in the area is its position with regards to the main arterial motorway networks. The M8 links North Lanarkshire West bound to Glasgow and beyond, east bound to Edinburgh and the Lothians, there is quick access to the M80 which links to Stirling, the North, the M74 to Carlisle and the South. All theses motorways are within easy driving distance of Wishaw.

 

Sport and recreation

The town enjoys well used sports facilities including Wishaw Sports Centre which has two swimming pools, badminton and martial arts facilities, as well as a running track and football pitch. Wishaw Golf Course has a long and proud history and well looked after.

Belhaven Park is popular and offers numerous facilities for all users.

 

Notable Wishaw People

There have been many famous and successful people of all fields who have been born or raised in Wishaw. Notably in the field of sports are World Snooker Champion John Higgins, Scottish International footballers: Tommy Gemmell and Kieran Tierney, English International Joe Baker and racing driver John Clelland.

Those from the world of entertainment include: Alison Turriff (Musician) Paul Higgins (Actor), Enrico Cocozza (Scottish film maker) and ledgendary Scottish entertainers The Alexander Brothers.

Sir Samuel Curran the first Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde was raised in the town as was eminent Neuro Scientist Frank Welsh. Cardinal Thomas Winning and former Scottish Secretary of State Micheal Moore are like wise from the area.

A town with again a proud history of coal mining and Ironworks. One of its larger employers is the High Security Prison. It has numerous amenities and facilities including schools and shops while the local Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band have been World Piping champions.

The town is within very easy reach of the M8 to both Glasgow and Edinburgh .

Newmains

Associated with Heavy Industry, the town had at one time three major Iron Works. Nowadays service industries provide employment. The village is very well placed for commuting links given its proximity to the M8 and M80.

Newarthill/Cleland/Cleghorn

Three villages to the north of Motherwell and with quick access to Motherwell and Wishaw. Well placed for quick access to the M8.
