Town history

This historical North-Eastern market town dates back to the Roman times and was the site of the famous Roman fort ‘Concangis’. Chester-le-Street got its unique name thanks to the road that ran from north to south through the town, which inspired the Romans to call it 'Chester le Street'- Roman for 'road'.

Chester-le-Street is also the location of the Beamish Museum, an open air museum, which tells the story of life in the North East of England during the 1820’s, 1900’s and 1940’s.  The museum  has a 1940’s farmhouse which demonstrates what life was like on the Home Front during the Second World War.

The Parish Church of St Mary & St Cuthbert is where the body of St Cuthbert remained for 112 years before being transferred to Durham Cathederal.

Places to go in Chester-le-Street

The Black Knight restaurant is renowned locally, applauded for its excellent choice of wines and pineapple upside down cake!  The restaurant is located within the grounds of Lumley Castle which is no ordinary hotel- it’s a Grade I listed 14th century castle.

In true North-Eastern spirit, there are plenty of fine watering holes in which to enjoy a beer, including locals favourite the Church Mouse, a restaurant/ bar with fabulous, open log burning fires, and  for good Italian food, Sambucas is delicious.
