Government department move welcomed by Your Move Darlington

It might not be the first place that you’d think of as being the centre of UK trade policy but it’s Teesside that’s recently ‘come up trumps’ after being designated as a Freeport by the government -and that’s not all. Darlington has also been earmarked as one of just four new ‘trade and investment hubs’ within the UK with not one, but two, government departments relocating to the area.

We asked David James, an Associate Director for Your Move, what this means for Darlington in particular and, importantly, those relocating to the region as a result.

"We already knew that part of the Treasury was to move to Darlington and yet now the government has revealed that the Department for International Trade (DIT) will also establish a satellite HQ in the town. It’s great news because it will help stimulate the local property market, as more people look to relocate to buy or rent in the town, and could lead to greater investment in the area generally.

In recent years, uSwitch crowned Darlington as the seventh best place to live in the UK and that’s not surprising to us. Great properties on offer

For those looking to relocate we’ve got new build developments with family homes, on the edge of the town, many large, period town-centre townhouses and semi-detached properties as well as characterful country homes and conversions in charming nearby villages.  On average a 2 bed terraced house can be bought for £60,000, 3 bed semis start at £130,000, and in the more popular parts of town, family homes are available from £250,000 to £600,000. Good transport links too

And, for those who need easy access to major cities, we’ve also got some great transport links, as befits the birthplace of passenger railways. Darlington is on the main East Coast train line with frequent trains to Newcastle (just 30 minutes away), London (two hours 40 minutes away) and Edinburgh (two and a quarter hours away). The A1 (M) is just outside Darlington too, with junctions north and south of the town, and Durham Tees Valley airport's a 20-minute drive away or, as alternatives, we’ve got Newcastle Airport and Manchester Airport easily accessible too.

For those looking to escape to the countryside, we have North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty nearby. Lovely places to visit at weekends or during holiday periods or to enjoy with visiting friends and relatives.
