How to protect your home from storm damage

Your home is in your hands

Storm Isha has been battering homes across the UK, and with storm Jocelyn hitting just a week later, we know a lot of people will be thinking about how they can keep their property safe from storm and adverse weather damage.

Here are some preventative measures you can take today to help reduce the impact a storm could have on your home.

How can I protect my house from a storm?

1. Check your roof

Storms bring strong winds and often heavy rain too. Therefore your property’s roof must be properly maintained.

Safely check your roof for loose or cracked tiles that could be dislodged during a storm. If your property has a chimney, you should check it is secure and there are no loose bricks.

Inspect the ceilings inside your property, especially on the top floor or in the loft if you have one, as damp or discolouring internally could indicate a significant roof problem which could worsen if heavy rain persists.

2. Secure garden fixtures

Anything you have in your property’s garden could be at risk of being damaged or, in strong winds, coming loose and damaging your property.

For example, garden fixtures could be blown into windows by strong winds and cause serious damage to your property.

If you have a garage or an outhouse, move anything that you can’t secure inside safely, such as bins. If you have a vehicle, it would be a good idea to park it inside the garage too.

3. Get your home insured

If your property were to be damaged by adverse weather, such as flooding or strong winds, would you be able to afford repair costs?

While taking precautionary measures to protect your property is a good idea, sometimes it just isn’t enough during the most intense storms.

Therefore it’d be smart to insure your home now, just in case you need to make repairs to your property in the future.

With our trusted partner First2Protect, you can get your property insured and have access to 24/7 call-outs and tradesmen with no excess.

4. Install surge protectors

During lightning storms sometimes lightning strikes can lead to power surges. When power surges into your property, plugged-in devices such as computers or televisions could be damaged.

An easy preventative measure is to invest in surge-proof plug extenders. You could go one step further and have a contractor safely install a surge-protection device (SPD) into your fuse board.

Remember that during a storm, whether it be flooding, lightning or strong winds, you should always keep yourself and your loved ones safe by remaining inside your property.
