Find an outdoor space that works for your lifestyle

As estate agents, we often hear buyers say that a garden is high on their list of priorities, particularly as the summer months approach. It's easy to understand why. The thought of enjoying a morning coffee in the sunshine, entertaining friends and family on a warm evening, or simply relaxing outdoors after a busy day is a major attraction for many homebuyers.

However, one of the most common misconceptions is that a garden is only valuable during the summer. In reality, a well designed outdoor space can be enjoyed throughout the year. From the first signs of spring bulbs emerging from the soil, to colourful autumn displays and the beauty of a frosty winter morning, gardens provide a constantly changing backdrop to our homes. They offer space to relax, connect with nature, exercise, entertain and escape from the pressures of everyday life, regardless of the season.

When helping buyers search for their next home, we often find that outdoor space is about much more than simply having a garden. The key question is whether that garden suits the lifestyle and aspirations of the people who will be living there.

For some buyers, a south facing garden that enjoys sunshine throughout the day is essential. For others, practicality is more important. Families may be looking for a safe and secure area where children can play, while keen gardeners might be searching for vegetable plots, raised beds, greenhouses, or simply enough space to indulge their passion for gardening. Those seeking peace and tranquillity often prioritise privacy and mature surroundings, while wildlife enthusiasts may be drawn to gardens that attract birds, butterflies, hedgehogs, and other visitors from the natural world.

Over the years, we have also seen how significantly outdoor space can influence a property's desirability and value. Buyers are increasingly seeking a harmony between indoor and outdoor living and the relationship between the size of the house and the size of the plot is often a key consideration. A generous garden can make a property stand out from the competition, while an outdoor space that feels proportionate to the home often appeals to a wider range of purchasers.

Of course, maintaining a garden requires time, effort, and sometimes investment. Some buyers question whether it is worth the commitment. The answer depends entirely on personal priorities. If spending time outdoors, gardening, entertaining or simply enjoying open space is important to you, then a garden can add immeasurable value to your quality of life as well as your property.

What is clear from speaking to buyers every day is that there is no such thing as the perfect garden  only the perfect garden for the individual or family who owns it. Understanding how you want to use your outdoor space is just as important as choosing the right house itself.

Whether you're looking for a family friendly lawn, a gardener's paradise, a wildlife haven, or a private retreat, taking the time to consider your outdoor requirements can make all the difference. After all, a garden is not simply part of a property; for many people, it becomes an extension of the home and a place where some of life's best moments are enjoyed throughout the year.
