Why move to Ilkeston?

Ilkeston is town in Borough of Erewash, Derbyshire on the River Erewash, from which the borough takes its name. The town is close to both Derby and Nottinghamshire.

Its major industries were coal mining, iron working and lace making, but have now all disappeared. Stanton Ironworks was on of the largest employers Known and Stanton and Staveley, continuing a long- standing tradition of iron working and pipework. It's now a market town with the market place still the site of the Charter Fair which celebrated its 765th anniversary in 2018. This makes the fair older than Nottingham's Famous Goose fair and is one of the largest fairs in the country, indeed in Europe.

 

Transport and travel

There’s easy access to the M25, M26 motorways from Ilkeston and a main railway stations with two platforms, serviced by Northern Trains Leeds-Sheffield and Nottingham service which operates hourly. Some early morning/late evening trains start or finish at Sheffield. There are also good local bus services within Ilkeston. Trent Barton operate the majority of buses including the Ilkeston Flyer into Derby, the 21 into Nottingham, Black Cat to Mansfield, My15 to Long Eaton and East Midlands Airport.

 

Parks and recreation

Victoria Park in the centre of the town is one of the most prestigious parks in the Borough of Erewash. Local residents and fiercely proud of the park committed to seeking way ways of addressing young and old generations. There is a bowls club, band stand still used on Sundays in the summer and keep fit and school groups gather for community leisure activities.

Victoria Leisure Centre is also located in the Centre of the town having a swimming pool, dance studio and gym. Rutland sport park offers a fitness suite, running track, athletics facilities and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Pewit Gold Course is a challenging nine hole, mature golf course and Footgolf is situated at the end of West end Drive in Ilkeston.

Residents can also enjoy visiting Shipley Country Park were there is always lots to see and do, walking, Cycling, horse riding, bird watching, angling, picnicking, kite flying, jogging, photography and exploring and much more.

 

Schools

There are a three main schools Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy on King George Avenue, Bennerley Fields School on Stratford Street and Chaucer Junior School (Primary) on Cranmer Street.

Derby College in Ilkeston situated on Pimlico offers apprenticeships, A levels, technical, part-time, adult and higher education courses across Derby.

 

Restaurants and shopping

The Albion Centre includes B&M bargains situated on Bath street where Studs the 5 star Jacket potato stall is situated. Water side Retail Park in located close to the town centre including Argos and Marks and Spencer. Giltbrook shopping Park is 2 miles away with Ikea, homewares, clothing and pets plus cafes and restaurants. There are also a number of smaller, local independents shops in and around Ilkeston cafes and restaurants to cater for all budgets.
